I had always been told about the splendor and evergreen forest of the Black Forest in Germany (Schwarzwald in German). However, the actual experience I had with it was something that no one or anything else could be allowed to prepare me for.
It is such a place where capturing it with a camera or describing it in words is impossible-you have to feel it, to believe it.
I was fortunate enough to vacation for a few days strolling into this charming locality and at every moment, I felt breathless, peace, and closeness with nature.
Where is the Black Forest Located?
A part of the Black Forest is found in southwest Germany, which is in Baden-Württemberg state. Geographically, the woodland can be seen travelling from the Rhine Valley near the French frontier to the upper Danube to the east.
I began my journey from Freiburg, which is one of the biggest cities in the vicinity of the Forest. Freiburg is a lively university town with amazing medieval architecture, and it is a perfect entrance to the forest.
From Freiburg, I found my way into the center of the Black. At first, I was impressed by the rapid transition of the city into the dense, tall woods. The forest is so vast, stretching around 6,000 square kilometers, that it looks like you have walked into a different planet.
The further you go, the weaker the external noise becomes. The stillness swings to the sound of rustling tree leaves, birds singing, and here and there, the sound of a stream gently flowing.
The Speciality of the Black Forest
What sets the Black Forest apart is the fact that it brings together both natural beauty and cultural heritage. The trees are very close together and dark—hence the name “Black Forest”—and the forests are adorned by the sleepy meadows, the calmness of the lakes, and the little, charming, old villages.
The scenario is like one in a fairy tale, and that is so because the Brothers Grimm were the ones who were inspired by the Dark Forest when writing some of their legendary stories.
One of my favorite moments during my visit was walking through the tracks. As I walked through the Dark Forest, I felt the air differently. It was very crisp and clean and was filled with chemical compounds predominantly from pine and moss, allowing me the opportunity to smell the pine and moss.
I had already drunk half the water in my bottle and used the vest of a local to support my legs. The Dark Forest Waters are so good they are different from regular water as they come from a natural spring. It was such a pleasure getting my sustenance from that stream, and I felt very close to the Dark Forest, raw and crisp.
Dr. Wolfgang Schaub, a historian specializing in the region’s natural and cultural heritage, points out:
“The Black Forest is not just simply a place that offers stunning sceneries, it is a demonstration of the bond between man and nature that lasts centuries. The typical villages, virgin ecosystems and aged woods symbolize harmony cultivated over the years.”
The Dark Forest, moreover, is a place with authentic cultural phenomena. This area is the birthplace of the Forest cake (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte), a deadly cake consisting of layers of chocolate cake, whipped cream, and cherries, soaked with cherry schnapps.
I have enjoyed a piece of it in a local café in the village of Triberg and through the taste the cake brought me. It was indeed the best cake I’ve ever had. It was lavish, vivid, and smooth, with just the right amount of cherry schnapps.
Timeless Art in the Heart of Schonach
Another thing that grabbed my attention was the way cuckoo clocks were made. These are the kind Forest is famous for, and I stopped by a store in Schonach, one of the small towns, where I witnessed skilled craftsmen at work.
Each clock showed off fine details that included little figures of animals, people, and sometimes views from Forest sagas. No wonder the region is a top destination for its cuckoo clocks—each one was like a unique artwork.
What City in Germany is Closest to the Black Forest?
Freiburg in Breisgau is the largest city, the Black Forest near and appears as a prime location to set out for a week in the region. It is situated on the west side of the Dark Forest, and from this place, you have the southern part of the Forest only at a stone’s throw.
In itself, Freiburg is a very beautiful city with its cobbled streets, medieval cathedral, and a precautionary and eco-conscious vibe. The Initiatives is one of the main things the city is famous for, so whether you are walking through the majestic forest or the labyrinthine streets, you must be in sync with nature.
Even if Freiburg is the nearest big city, small towns like Triberg, Baden-Baden, and Titisee are also suitable for visiting other parts of the Forest, and they are a bit more comfortable for tourists.
I spent a few nights in Triberg, the town with the highest waterfall in Germany. The sound of the falling water and the sight of it descending the hills were so entrancing and added to the naturally occurring magic in the woods.
Why is the Black Forest So Famous?
This Forest is a place that is known for many reasons, but what attracted me to this beautiful and historically rich land is the combination of natural beauty and cultural history.
It would be no exaggeration to say that the Drak Forest looks like something from a fairy tale. The amazing woods, the mysterious shadows, and the silent valleys that make you feel like you are the only one on Earth inspired the world’s best-known fairy tales,
“Hansel and Gretel” and “Sleeping Beauty.”
As I roamed the forest, I could easily envision Hansel and Gretel walking through the woods, lost and searching for a way out.
However, besides its connection to myths, the Forest has also become widely known for its health resorts. Baden-Baden, the city on the top of the Dark Forest, has been one of the most famous spa destinations for centuries.
Besides, the Roman soldiers came to these thermal springs to rest and recover, and even today, visitors flock to Baden-Baden for its luxury bathhouses and the wellness section of the city.
Unwinding in Nature: Spa Relaxation and Scenic Trails in the Black Forest
Being the spa, I pampered myself in the mineral-rich and warm waters and watched the hills around covered with dark green trees. This was pure relaxation.
The Dark Forest, along with its natural and cultural milestones, is also famous for its long network of walking and cycling trails. There are many miles of trails, which are divided into simple or more difficult climbs, and as a result, they present some breathtaking views of the valleys, mountains, and lakes.
One of the most amazing countryside walks I had was to Schluchsee, a breathtaking lake enclosed by luscious woods. The path bounded along the lake’s edge, and I lost myself in the stillness of the water and the way tree shadows floated on the surface that only time had ever touched.
Conclusion
If you are considering coming to visit, it is a good idea to all yourself enough time to tour both the forest and the lovely villages that are scattered around the place.
Julia Ernst, who is a local nature guide, was quite vocal about the attraction of the forest to the fans of outdoor activities:
“The Black Forest is a bottom paradise for hikers and bikers. The trails are very good, and there is something for every experience level. You can go the short way, or you can stay in the forest for days, and the forest is going to be beautiful and quiet anyway.”
