During my India trip, I had a chance to pay a visit to the Shree Dwarkadhish Temple that resides in Gujarat. This temple has been built for the devotees of Lord Krishna who are its followers and they consider it a unique place. This is a special place for visiting devotees.

The Dwarkadhish Temple is placed on the seacoast of Dwarka in the state of Gujarat. This is one of the ‘Char’ dham on earth all of which are the four most sacred locations in Hinduism,; the others being Badrinath, Puri, and Rameshwaram.
Most people are of the opinion that merely the temple was built approximately a couple of thousand years ago, not to mention the fact that the current building has been standing there for over a millennium now.
On my way up to the temple, I was surprised by the length of the building and the carvings on it. The temple stands about 80 meters high and has plenty of detailed designs that tell stories from ancient Indian mythology, most of which are actually about Lord Krishna.

Ultimately, the marine excavations in Dwarka indicated that a city was found under the sea, signifying its golden period. These narratives that I came across, truly made me appreciate my stay at the temple even more.
Arriving at Dwarka
The atmosphere of devotion prevailed when I first set foot in Dwarka. Pilgrims came to pay homage because it is a very special place where they can get Lord Krishna’s blessings.
It was cheerful and the devotees were singing bhajans as well as chanting mantras. I instantly felt a complete sense of calm in the place as I entered it.
One of the first things I noticed was the massive flag flying from the temple. Popularly known as the “Dwaja,” it is actually changed four times a day. Some people have an opinion that the mere act of looking at it can purge your soul. I was particularly keen on the daily ritual that attracts so many visitors.
Entering the Temple
I strode inside the precincts of the temple and the lofty seven-story structure in chalukya style caught my attention in the first place. The magnificence and grandeur of the temple were enough to command respect and inspire one at the same time.
It’s great to know that the walls and pillars of this temple are adorned with different carvings depicting the life of Krishna. The primary sanctum is displayed by a majestic carved statue of Lord Krishna made of dark marble which is dressed like a king.
I was deeply content with the tranquility that washed over me being in front of the statue. The priests, known as “Brahmins,” were performing rites of worship, and their hymns pervaded the environment, leaving an excerpt from a genuinely spiritual environment in the temple.
The Sacred Rituals
A major part of my visit which I will never forget particularly was the Mangla Aarti – a morning time ceremony where lamps were lit, hymns were sung, and flowers and sweets were offered to Lord Krishna. The combination of devotion, the smell of incense, and the sound of conch shells were the components of a fantastic experience like no other.
Next, was the “Abhishek” ceremony, where you could watch the statue of Lord Krishna being bathed in milk, honey, and water. It was heartwarming to see people of all ages and backgrounds coming together in devotion during these rituals.
Exploring the Surroundings
The Sacred River Gomti
The Gomti River that flows past the temple is one of the most holy rivers, and pilgrims take dipping in it as a part of their pilgrimage to cleanse themselves from their sins. The boat trip which allowed me to relish the tranquillity of the river and escape from the bustling temple was a goal opener for me.
Bet Dwarka Island
It’s just a short boat ride to Bet Dwarka, which is the actual birthplace of Lord Krishna. The temple dedicated to Krishna alone is on this small island and in the vicinity of it, under the water, are the remains of past constructions thus most people find it more interesting to visit. The sea journey from there over the Arabian Sea was an exciting experience.
Rukmini Devi Temple
Locally near Dunbar, there is the Rukmini Devi Temple which was established in honor of Rukmini, the wife of Lord Krishna. This temple is still very significant despite its modest size. According to local folklore, Rukmini was cursed and her temple is singled out from the main one. The temple, which is somewhat muted, describes these stories and portrays the sacred relationship between Krishna and Rukmini.

Shree Dwarkadhish Temple stands as an emblem of religiously and architecturally beautiful attributes. Also, it is a major worship place for millions of people across the globe. This temple houses a central place of worship for followers of Lord Vishnu and his avatar Krishna, and it is of equal significance to all of them.
What stuck me was that all these people from different strands of life could come together because of the love and devotion for Krishna. He stands as the teacher and the example for them that life means not giving up hope and struggling against the bad in the world. We must not forget the fact that Krishna is the one who always takes his followers under his wing.
