History of the Company “Outrigger Resorts and Hotels”
Before getting into Outrigger Resort, let’s reveal the story behind the foundation of many hotels like Outrigger Waikiki. Outrigger Resorts and Hotels is a fancy hotel group based in Honolulu. They run luxurious hotels, condos, and vacation spots in Hawaii, the Asia-Pacific area, and islands in the Indian Ocean. When we talk about its history – it is quite big! It was the time of 1947 when Roy and Estelle Kelley – led the foundation of Outrigger Resorts and Hotels.
Roy was an architect who used to work on some big buildings in Honolulu. In 1963, Roy bought the old Outrigger Canoe Club and built the Outrigger Waikiki there. Four years later, in 1967, they opened the Outrigger Waikiki On The Beach hotel, the first one with the Outrigger name.
Throughout the 1970s, Outrigger kept growing, adding more hotels across Hawaii. They got their first luxury hotel, the Prince Kuhio Hotel, in 1982. By 1986, Outrigger was the biggest hotel chain in Hawaii, with over 7000 rooms.
They didn’t stop there. In 1989, Outrigger took over the Royal Waikoloa Hotel, and in 1993, they turned the Kauai Hilton into the Outrigger Kauai Beach Hotel. Then, in 1996, Outrigger opened its first hotel outside the US, the Outrigger Marshall Islands Resort. In 1999, Outrigger decided to focus on different types of hotels.
OHANA Hotels and Resorts: The Meaning of “Ohana”
The company created OHANA Hotels and Resorts for three-star properties while keeping the Outrigger brand for more luxurious five-star ones. But what does Ohana mean? “Ohana” means “family” in Hawaiian. In 2014, the chain had 40 hotels worldwide with 11,000 rooms. The company even added two hotels in Fiji to its list.
In March 2016, Outrigger sold its four Australian hotels to the Mantra Group. Later, in November 2016, they agreed to be bought by a company called KSL Capital Partners, known for investing in travel and leisure. Outrigger then had 38 hotels, condominiums, and vacation resorts.
Jeff Wagoner became the president and CEO in April 2018, while Scott Dalecio, KSL Resorts’s CEO, became Outrigger’s executive chairman.
